Two issues of Scientific American with articles on “Liquid-Propellant Rocket Development" Author: Goddard, Robert H. Place: Publisher: Date: 1936 Description: Two full issues of the magazine in original pictorial wrappers. Illustrated. August 1936 - Goddard article on pp. 78-80 September 1936 - Goddard article on pp. 148-151 Also includes: Pendray, G. Edward. Number One Rocket Man / A Silhouette of the Shy Massachusetts Physicist Who Pioneered in Rocket Research…” Scientific American, May 1938: pp. 270-272. Front cover marred, affecting a few letters of text. Goddard’s momentous publication, announcing his first launch of a liquid fuel rocket, in a Smithsonian pamphlet in March, was reprinted six months later, in two monthly issues of the Scientific American. Unlike that journal’s condensation of his lengthy 1920 thesis, which subjected him to ridicule and drove him into secretive seclusion, the 1936 publications, except for some removed paragraph headers, were exact reprints of the original text. The photographs were also identical, though reduced in size and sometimes a bit truncated (and, in one minor case, printed in mirror image). The Pendray article, beyond admiring, marks that publicist’s devotion to what some critics called the Goddard “legend”, which Pendray helped perpetuate through his American Rocket Society. When Goddard died, ten years later, Pendray, together with the scientist’s widow, would edit his papers and write his first published biography. Lot Amendments Condition: Overall good or better.
