TWO 19TH CENTURY SWORDS The first circa 1830-48, by Coulaux Frères, Klingenthal; the second dated 1864 The first a French épée with blade of flattened diamond section finely etched for about half its length with profuse foliate decoration, trophies etc, mostly on a gilt ground (slight wear), cast gilt-bronze guard with fixed shells, the outer one cast with the cockerel of the Orléans dynasty within an oakleaf wreath flanked by military standards, the inner one originally plain but now with applied silver 'N', knuckle-guard with cast decoration, fishskin grip without wire binding, and pommel decorated with thunderbolts (gilding somewhat rubbed); the second a U.S. Army sword, with straight fullered blade (stained and pitted), the ricasso stamped 'US/J.F./1864', cast brass one-piece hilt, the knuckle-guard stamped 'GKC', and imitation wire-wound grip 29¾in. (75.5cm.), and 28¼in. (71.7cm.) blades (2)
