Stroud, a Philadelphia Judge whose 1827 work "A Sketch of the Laws Relating to Slavery in the Several States of the United States of America" was the first substantial legal treatise on slavery in America, and served as a resource for Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Stroud added substantially to this work in 1856. Northup's work was dedicated to Stowe.
