ca 1855-1860. .45 caliber, 30" octagonal barrel, marked on the top of barrel H.L. Siebert, 230 Main St. Cincinnati, O. Back-action percussion lock marked T. Gibbons. Cov, KY False breech and turned at the muzzle for bullet starter. Patent breech, double screwed tang. Walnut full-stock with double-set triggers and German silver escutcheons and two wedges holding barrel to stock. Iron furniture, and sling swivels. Complete with original Turner type bayonet with brass handle and marked Bahn-Frei, marked by its maker on the bayonet hilt, R. Hug, Cin, O. in two lines. Blade is 18" and 23" overall. Complete with original leather scabbard. Gibbons worked in Covington, KY as a gunsmith during the 1850s and moved to St. Louis in 1859. Rudolph Hug was a cutler and dental instrument maker in Cincinnati, OH in the 1850s. Hug bayonets are very rare; the consignor states he knows of nine in over the last fifty years of research. H.L. Siebert is found working in Cincinnati, OH in 1850 as a gunsmith and owner of the Buckeye Gun Store and later moved to Columbus, OH in 1866. The American Turners were a German-American para-military athletic society. The American Turner Societies (Turnverein) were fist established in Cincinnati in 1848. Included with this lot is a copy of Rifles and Blades of the German-American Militia and the Civil War. See Rentschler, 2003:76 for an illustration of this firearm. Condition: Barrel retains some original brown finish turning to plum. Original case colors on breechblock, tang, hammer and lock. The lock has turned a soft mottled grey-to-brown. Stock has nicks and dings with some scratches. Brass handle of bayonet has an untouched dark mustard patina. Blade is gunmetal grey with some staining. Scabbard is intact, but fragile and with some cracking and crazing. A very rare bayonet and rifle to find together in today's market.
