A Narrative of the Operations of a small British force, under the command of Brigadier-General Sir Samuel Auchmuty, employed in the reduction of Monte Video, on the river Plate, A.D. 1807. By a field officer on the staff. London: B. M'Millan for John Joseph Stockdale, 1807. 4° (282 x 213mm). 1 engraved plan. (Light offsetting of plan onto title.) Original boards, letterpress title on upper cover, publisher's advertisement on lower cover, uncut (rebacked and cornered, some soiling to covers, inner hinges repaired), 20th-century brown cloth slip-case. RARE: only one copy is listed as having sold at auction in the past twenty five years. Sabin 51819. [Major-General William Carr BERESFORD (1768-1854)]. - El Commandante Britanico con el fin de que el comercio de esta Plaza pueda tomar toda la actividad de que son subceptibles las presentes circunstarcias del Pais... Buenos Aires: 4 August 1806. Small 2° (272 x 175mm). 4pp. with drop-head title. (Section of inner blank margin cut away without loss, old folds). Unbound, 20th-century red morocco-backed blue cloth box, titled in gilt on 'spine'. A VERY RARE EPHEMERAL ITEM, printed on a local press, listing the commercial regulations to be imposed by the British force occupying Buenos Aires, under the command of William Carr Beresford. Issued five weeks after Beresford and Sir Home Popham captured Buenos Aires from Viceroy Sobremonte, and eight days before Sobremonte retook the city, forcing Beresford to surrender. Brigadier-General Auchmuty (1756-1822) who had been despatched with a force to strengthen Beresford's troops, arrived too late to help Beresford and turned his attention to Monte Video instead: the success of his efforts are recorded in the first title above.
