During the early part of the 19th century and before the network of railways had taken over, canals played a very important part in the transportation of goods from one part of the country to another. There were - as with so many organisations of those days - many companies involved in the running of canals and a number of these appointed their own constables, The Policeman's Lot by Mervyn Mitton, page 50 refers
