New York: Farrar, Straus & Young [1952]. Small 2 o . Numerous color photographic illustrations of portraits, facsimiles, documents, etc. (Paperclip burns on a few pages.) Blue leather gilt; cardboard slipcase. LIMITED EDITION, one of 250 (no. 197) specially bound copies for presentation purposes. Presentation copy, boldly inscribed by Truman to on colophon: "To: Melvon O. Carter From: The President. White House, Jan. 16, 1953." With an additional Truman inscription on facing frontispiece portrait of Truman: "Thanks to an able public servant." ALSO INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY BESS TRUMAN beneath her photograph (facing p.128): "To Melvon Carter -- With the best of wishes and great appreciation of your many kindnesses Bess W. Truman," AND BY TRUMAN'S DAUGHTER," MARGARET (p.160). Carter, the general foreman of the White House grounds from 1932-1972, evidently requested the autographs of other White House figures included here: Maj. Gen. Wallace Graham (White House physician), p.18; and Matthew J. Connelly (appointments secretary), p.113. RARE. Only five other copies of this limited edition have appeared at auction in the last thirty years. A nice combination of autographs by Truman's entire family, all signed in the waning days of the administration.
