Williamson, 6 April 1945, with four-line autograph postscript. 1 page, 4to, Vice-presidential stationery, small closed tears at edges, remnants of mounting on top edge of verso . SIX DAYS BEFORE BECOMING PRESIDENT, TRUMAN CALLS HIMSELF A "POLITICAL EUNUCH" in this letter to an old Missouri political pal: "I am certainly glad to have the reactions which you gave me on the various phases of the State administration," he tells Williamson, the district attorney for Callaway County. In an animated autograph postscript he writes: "Keep sending 'em. Tell Tom Van Sant that just because I've become a political eunuch he needn't strike me from his list." Van Sant was a banker in Fulton, Missouri, and another long-time Truman friend. Vice-presidents have often found scatological or vulgar ways of expressing their frustration with the office. John Nance Garner famously likened it to a "bucket of warm piss." Truman's self-deprecating description only applied for six more days. On the afternoon of 12 April 1945, he was summoned to the White House to receive the shocking news that Franklin Roosevelt was dead, and that he was now President.
