Author: Savonarola, Girolamo Place: Venice Publisher: Alexandrum de Bindonis Date: 1521 Description: 107 pp. (A-N8, O4 - with final leaf a blank). With woodcuts on title-page and verso of final printed leaf. (8vo) 15.5x10.5 cm. (6x4"), early limp vellum, leather ties. "The triumph of the crosse, or, Of the verity of faith," by the 15th century Dominican friar, influential in the politics of Florence until his excommunication and execution in 1498. He was known for his book burning, destruction of what he considered immoral art, and his perception of what he thought the Renaissance ought to become. He vehemently preached against the moral corruption of much of the clergy at the time, and his main opponent was Rodrigo Borgia, who was Pope Alexander VI. The woodcut on the title-page shows Savonarola in his cell writing, with printer's device at end. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling and wear to covers; marginal stain to title-page and following leaves, ink writing to bottom margin of title; very good. Item number: 213657
