Author: ** Place: Boston Publisher: Printed by Russell & Gardner Date: 1822 Description: 164, 72, [1] pp. 9x5¼, old pebbled cloth with leather corners, rebacked with modern morocco, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Significant American legal case. Lt. Joel Abbot, stationed at the Charlestown Navy Yard, alleged that Capt. Isaac Hull, who commanded the U.S.S. Constitution during the War of 1812, indulged in fraud against the U.S. government. Captain David Porter investigated the charges, realized that Hull was innocent, and turned around and charged Abbot with libel. Abbot was found guilty, removed from service for two years, then resumed his somewhat successful naval career, rising to the rank of captain. Sabin 96801. Lot Amendments Condition: Corners scuffed; some light foxing within, old in number on back of title, removed library plate from rear endpaper, else very good. Item number: 168445
