Title: Travelling Sketches in Various Countries Author: Fulton, Henry Place: London Publisher: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans Date: 1840 Description: Two volumes bound in one. 252; 220 pp. Illustrated with a few wood-engraved scenes and a folding frontispiece map for Volume II. 6¾x4¼, bound in contemporary maroon glazed diced calf, rebacked with same gilt-stamped and lettered contemporary spine laid on, covers decoratively blind-stamped, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt; with fore-edge painting of a pastoral scene, showing an English castle in the background, a crest in the left corner containing a red cross with white background, and two people rowing down a river, executed perhaps in the late nineteenth century. Volume I comprises Europe travels; Volume II Asia, including Russia, Poland, India, Macao, China, etc., with discussions on tea production. From W.A. Foyle’s Library at Beeleigh Abbey with elaborate gilt-stamped morocco bookplate on front pastedown. Also, engraved bookplate from Svend Fridolf Jacobsen and a gift inscription dated July 1842. Lot Amendments Condition: Mild wear overall, a few nicks; small ink spots on rear pastedown; else very good or better. Item number: 145951
