Beschreibung:

TRANSLATION AND PASSION OF ST CHRYSOGONUS, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM. [Zara, 2nd half 13th century, restored 1498] 345 x 240mm. 21 leaves, collation: 1 10 (i-iii detached), 2 11 (of 12, lacking xi, and possibly a singleton between ii and iii), two columns written in dark brown ink in a gothic bookhand, justification: 240 x 185mm, rubrics and 15th-century colophon in red, capitals touched yellow and red, one-line initials of blue with red flourishing, 3 HISTORIATED INITIALS with portraits of the saint, the donor and an equestrian figure, all painted in dark shades of green, red and grey-brown (damage, staining or fading to most folios, wear and loss to the illumination on ff.1 and 10v, gutters reinforced). Seventeenth-century paper wrappers with two sets of 17th-century transcriptions (torn and stained). This account of the Translation, Gesta and Passion of St Chrysogonus comes from the Benedictine Abbey of St. Grisogono in Zara, Dalmatia (Zadar) which housed the saint's relics. It seems originally to have been produced in the 13th century, the illumination is close in style to Venetian manuscripts of that date, and once formed ff.35-55 of a Legendary. The manuscript has a prominent colophon (on f.9) dated 1498, written by the monk Zoilus Joannes, who takes credit for the restoration of the original faded script. He was presumably a member of the scriptorium of the monastery, known through the survival of other manuscripts: G. Praga, "Lo scriptorium dell'abbazia benedittina di S. Grisogono in Zara", Arch. Stor. per la Dalmazia , fasc. 33-49 (extr. Rome, 1930).
