These five important white papers mark important staging posts on the journey towards independence for Trans-Jordan, beginning with the first Anglo-Trans-Jordanian treaty of 1928, which gave Trans-Jordan nominal independence but which allowed for British control of foreign policy and some financial affairs, whilst enabling the British to keep a military presence in the country. The latter was altered through the terms of the subsequent supplement of 1941, which was followed by the first Treaty of Alliance between the two countries, signed in March 1946 two months prior to the United Nations approval of the end of the British Mandate in Palestine and the recognition of Transjordan as an independent sovereign kingdom.
