Lot of 2 photographs by Trager and Ford, including Camp at Wounded Knee (7 x 4 in., on 8 x 5 in. mount), with penciled inscription at bottom and photographers' backmark; and the frozen body of Chief Big Foot (7 x 4.25 in., on 8.5 x 5.25 in. mount), with inked identification and a date in colored pencil, but no studio mark. Wounded Knee was one of the most criminal military blunders and horrible massacres in American history. Attempting to disarm the Lakota, Major Samuel M. Whitside and the 7th U.S. Calvary, opened fire on a crowd of Lakota men, women, and children. The army dug massive graves to bury the 150 men, women, and children killed. Some still crawled out of the pits and walked miles through the snow to safety. Provenance: John Painter Collection of American Indian & Western Photography Condition: Toning of the images and cases of scattered foxing
