TORY, Geoffroy (1490-1533). Aediloquium; ite, epitaphia septem de amorum aliquot passionibus . Paris: Simon de Colines, 1530.
TORY, Geoffroy (1490-1533). Aediloquium; ite, epitaphia septem de amorum aliquot passionibus . Paris: Simon de Colines, 1530. 8 o (156 x 99 mm). Architectural title-border and 7 small woodcuts, each a variation on a basic design of two hearts illustrating the seven epitaphs. (Leaf b4 with corner torn away with no loss, some pale staining.) Old blind-tooled calf, covers laid into modern calf. Provenance : 1840 purchase note on rear pastedown; acquired from Librairie Paul Jammes, 1977. FIRST EDITION. The seven small woodcuts, each a variation on a basic design of two hearts, illustrate the seven epitaphs, and are attributed to Tory. "The privilege for this work was granted June 18, 1531, and was not printed with the Aediloquium but with Tory's 1531 printing of his translation of Xenophon. On the basis of this, Bernard ( Tory , p. 31) believes that the Aediloquium was printed in the first few months of 1531, i.e. 1530 old style" (Mortimer). The title-border is one of the borders from the octavo Horae B.M.V. printed for Tory by Colines in 1527. Brunet V, 898-899; Mortimer French 525; Renouard Colines , p. 169. [ Bound between :] SALMONIUS, Joannes, called MACRINUS. Epithalamiorum liber unus . Paris: Gérard Morrhy 1531. BM/STC French , p. 393. -- MELANCHTHON, Philipp. Orationes . Hagenau: Johann Secer, 1528.
