Beschreibung:

(Torpedo Cruiser, 1850 tons, served in the Mediterranean, South Africa and later, the China Station, 1886-1905) H.M.S. Fearless Cruiser... Commissioned at Malta Nov 30th 1897 [ Diary compiled by a naval rating], manuscript, 54pp. excluding blanks, ruled throughout, a few small stains, original wrappers, dust-jacket, 8vo, 15th November 1897 - 30th October 1900. *** A vivid account of a tour of duty to the Mediterranean and South Africa in a torpedo cruiser at the time of the Boer War. Fearless travelled from Malta, through the Suez Canal and stopped at various places, including Zanzibar to take on coal as it travelled south. Once in South Africa waters the ship patrolled the coast, stopping and inspecting vessels, delivering mail, landing guns and artillery, lighting the ship for Queen Victoria's birthday and rendezvousing with other Royal Navy ships. In 1900 the ship was ordered back to the Mediterranean and thence to Britain where it was paid off at Spithead. The writer estimated that HMS Fearless travelled 40,000 miles on its tour of duty.
