FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. An account of the first major operation performed in England using hypnosis as the only form of anaesthesia. The patient, a 42 year old labourer from Nottinghamshire, felt no pain at all, and was aware only of a "crunching" noise when his thigh bone was sawed through. "The amputation was performed by Ward. Topham, a lawyer interested in mesmerism, performed the hypnosis. The controversy caused by this operation led to Elliotson's book [see lot 1055]" (Garrison-Morton).
