Folding map and full-page map printed in red and black after Christopher Tolkien, line illustrations after J. R. R. Tolkien, one full-page (a few leaves lightly spotted). Original red cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, top edge stained red (edges lightly rubbed and bumped, spine slightly faded and leant, light dampstain on lower part of spine and upper board). Provenance : James Dyson (1914-1990, his ownership inscription on front free endpaper, further inscribed by Tolkien 'signed for J.D. J.R.R. Tolkien', and by descent). First edition, eighth impression. Cf. Hammond and Anderson A5ai. The Two Towers . London: Jarrold & Sons Ltd for George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1968. 8° (221 x 140mm). Folding map printed in red and black after Christopher Tolkien (leaves in first half of the volume deeply creased at upper corner of gutter). Original red cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, top edge stained red, dustwrapper (corners very lightly rubbed, spine slightly leant, head of spine bumped causing short tears, dustwrapper with very light marking and short tears at edges). Provenance : James Dyson 1969 (presentation inscription on front free endpaper 'For Jim: With great affection from Priscilla [Tolkien] August 1969', further inscribed by Tolkien 'signed for Jim.
