Title: DAVID BROWN Author: ** Place: Boston Publisher: Date: April 4th, 1883 Description: Steamship sailing card, on porcelain coated stock, with color wood-engraving of a pennant flanked by patriotic emblems of he U.S. and Australia. 16.3x10 cm. (6½x4”). Sailing card for the vessel in Henry W. Peabody's Australian Line, bound for Adelaide, under Capt. Pendleton. Similar in design to the Civil War era card produced by Fred Rogers for Samuel Stevens & Co., reproduced on p.93 of Bruce Rogers' Clipper Ship Sailing Cards, about which he writes "The look of this 1863 card set the tone for what would be two decades of Boston-to-Australia cards advertising Henry W. Peabody vessels." Peabody was Samuel Stevens' partner until he left in 1867, taking over the Australian portion of Stevens' shipping business to form his own firm. An 1869 Peabody card is reproduced by Roberts on p.88. Lot Amendments Condition: Light glue residue on verso from mounting in scrapbook, near fine. Item number: 224006
