Beschreibung:

Lot of 4 outdoor tintypes featuring railroad engines, including: half plate tintype of a 4-4-0 locomotive type stopped on the tracks, with the "5" shown on the locomotive highlighted in gold. Three operators and/or workers are shown standing in front of the locomotive. Housed in half thermoplastic Union case with shield/scroll design (case with previously repaired crack). Significant vertical crease through center of plate, with some flaking and scratching on and near the crack. Additional scratches on plate. Quarter plate tintype of several operators/workers standing on or near a locomotive, housed in full case with credit on interior velvet mat to Willard, No. 1628 Market St. Tintype accompanied by modern typed label from unknown individual identifying the tintype as capturing the Grand Trunk Railway No. 2, which was built by the Neilson & Co. of Edinborough, Scotland in 1868 and was part of a batch of 25 alike sisters. They were nicknamed "champaign Cups" because of their distinctive wide smokestacks and served exclusively in Quebec, Canada. No. 2 was scrapped in 1894. Number of creases in plate, with some flaking and wear at or near the creases. Additional surface scratches. Some surface wear to case. CDV-sized tintype, approx. 2.25 x 3.625 in., showing a 4-4-0 locomotive type with "Fall River" visible on the cab of the engine. Five railroad workers are posed on or near the locomotive. This may capture the Fall River Railroad of Massachusetts, which was chartered in 1874 and opened in 1875 from New Bedford to Fall River through the towns of Dartmouth and Westport. The line was built to provide rail access to the mills in the eastern part of Fall River along the Quequechan River valley. Crease in lower right corner of plate, plus some minor surface scratches. Tintype, approx. 2 x 3.25 in., showing a 4-4-0 locomotive type with "Vermillion" visible on the cab of the engine. Four workers pose for the photograph. This may represent the Vermilion Valley Railroad line, which was completed in 1869 by the Indianapolis, Crawfordsville and Danville Railroad, and later became part of the Pekin-Indianapolis line of the Peoria and Eastern Railway, a New York Central Railroad subsidiary. Resolution a bit soft, indicating this might be a period copy image.
