Beschreibung:

358 pp. Illustrated with 10 steel-engraved plates including frontispiece and plate before the title page. 19x11.5 cm. (7½x4½ in.), original gilt-decorated brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. An unemployed New Englander, Welles embarked on a world tour with six friends, with hopes of a free ride for locating six paying passengers (the deal was reneged upon), traveling to South America, Mauritius, Australia and the gold camps, and Northern California, where he spent some time, particularly in the San Francisco area and at the gold diggings. Welles came to California in 1854 and describes life in Sacramento, a trip from French Creek across the Sierra Nevadas to Carson Valley, experiences among the Mormon Refugees in Nevada, the Vigilance Committee, and "hints to travelers" on the climate and resources of California. "He counters refugees from Utah in 1853: Mormons who had escaped after being robbed of all possessions, p. 296-298" - Flake 9678; Cowan p. 674; Hill p. 322-23; Howes W239.
