Title: Three Treatises on the Brain, the Eye, and the Ear Author: Monro, Alexander [Secundus] Place: Edinburgh Publisher: Bell & Bradfute Date: 1797 Description: 263 pp, plus extra leaf D*. 24 engraved plates (2 in outline) including 6 double page, one of which is partially hand-colored. (4to) 12¼x9¼, modern half calf and marbled boards. First Edition. "Monro Secundus carefully examined the exterior and interior anatomy of the brain, dissected the peripheral nerves and carried out considerable investigations of comparative neurology. He also illustrated the insula of the human brain, but did not describe it or name it. The interventricular foramen between the lateral and third ventricles was named for Monro secundus but had been illustrated and described previously as far back as da Vinci and Berengarius. Monro himself did not claim priority for his discovery, recognizing the contributions of others before him. In addition to his anatomical studies Monro also summarized (1783) the current concepts of the function of the nervous system." (Garrison, History of Neurology).
