Without a doubt, 1948 was a transition year for Oldsmobile. Some of the line used old style bodies, while some had the new post war look. It was also the last year that Oldsmobile offered its 257 cubic-inch, L-head straight-eight. Breathing through a two-barrel downdraft Carter carburetor, the high-torque eight generated 110 horsepower. For the Dynamic Series, engine choices included the eight or a six. If the smaller engine were selected, the car was a Dynamic 66; if the two extra cylinders were specified, it became a 68. With either engine, this “small” Oldsmobile was available in a choice of five body styles: Club Coupe, Club Sedan, Sedan, Convertible Coupe and four-door Wagon. Regardless of the body, the chassis featured GM’s excellent independent front suspension and a live rear axle. Hydraulic drums were fitted all around and the standard tire selection was a 6.00 X 16 size. Upholstery was available in either Bedford cord or broadcloth. Dual horns, dual sun visors and a cigarette lighter were standard on both the base and DeLuxe models. This particular 1948 Olds wagon is fitted with the cast-iron straight-eight and a manual transmission with floor shift. Having had only three owners from new, the 78,000 odometer reading is thought to be accurate. The current owner believes that the wagon was purchased new by a gentleman in Washington State, who used the car for extensive touring along the West Coast—including at least one trip to Mexico (the car bears a decal to this effect). The next owner was a Wisconsin man who acquired it in the 1960s or 70s. When he died, the current owner bought the stylish wagon at an estate auction in approximately 2002. Cosmetically very attractive, the Olds retains its original wood body, which has great margins and panel fit. It is believed to have been varnished approximately 30 years ago. At about the same time, the metal portions of the body were refinished in burgundy. The paint is in fair to good condition over what appears to be a rust-free body. The fabric roof panel is new and the glass is in good condition. According to the vendor, the “upholstery is in fantastic original condition.” This 1948 Oldsmobile wagon has benefited from extensive recent mechanical work, including a full service, new fuel pump and brakes, new correct wiring harness, rebuilt carburetors and a rebuilt fuel sending unit. It also has recent Goodrich whitewall tires. Inside, all gauges work and the dashboard features the correct period radio delete panel. Overall, this is a very honest and attractive unrestored car that is ready for extensive driving. It is sold with a current Michigan Title and Registration.
