Property of a Distinguished CollectorST JOHN ON PATMOS, THE ANNUNCIATION, AND THE VISITATION: THREE MINIATURES ON THREE LEAVES FROM AN ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN[France, c.1480] three vellum leaves, each c.200×130mm with the start of one of the main texts (the Extracts from the Gospels, and Matins and Lauds of the Hours of the Virgin) and each with a large miniature under a gold arched frame and above 10 lines of text and a 4-line initial surrounded by a full border of semi-naturalistic foliage and flowers and stylised acanthus, against plain parchment and geometric panels of gold, the versos each with 26 lines of text in a fine bâtarde script, with 1- and 2-line initials and line-fillers in gold on a burgundy background; the thin vellum with some cockling, some minor flaking of pigments, and some thumbing, but generally in good condition with generous margins; framed and glazed as a group The miniatures depict: (1) St John on the Island of Patmos writing the Book of Revelation, accompanied by his symbol the Eagle, the gold arched frame with fleurs-de-lys. (2) The Annunciation, with the Archangel Gabriel approaching from the left towards the Virgin, who reads a book at a prie-dieu. (3) The Visitation, with St Elizabeth kneeling and taking the hand of the Virgin as they meet on a path in a landscape. The overall appearance and iconography of the miniatures is typical of late-15th century Books of Hours, which were made in large numbers all over France for ‘middle-class’ patrons, but the page layout with 26 lines per page (more than usual), and the miniatures above ten lines of text (far more than usual), suggest that this example may be from a centre with idiosyncratic book-making practices, worthy of further study. The illuminator’s lavish use of gold for frames, draperies, woodwork, and for highlights on other surfaces (including vegetation) in the miniatures, and in the borders and initials, create a sumptuous appearance that would doubtless have appealed to the intended customers.Condition reportCondition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
