In March 1901 he left the unit and entered the Midland Mounted Rifles, serving with them from 12 March 1901 to 26 October 1901, and then Scott’s Railway Guards from 4 November 1901 to 30 April 1902. During the siege of Wepener, 9 - 25 April 1900, he served in the 2nd Battalion Brabant’s Horse, which held part of the northern perimeter. Brabant’s Horse was considered one of the best irregular corps in the war; the Midland Mounted Rifles were employed to keep roving Boers commandos out of the Cape Colony; Scott’s Railway Guards were employed to keep similar bands of Boers from destroying the main Kimberley railway line.
