Three books inscribed to Dr. Thomas Paine, NASA Administrator during the Lunar landing Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1968-1987 Description: Three volumes, each inscribed to Paine. Paine was the third administrator of NASA, succeeding the dynamic James Webb in October 1968 and remained until September 1970. A submarine commander during World War II, he held a PhD in Metallurgy and worked as a General Electric engineer until joining NASA, where he oversaw seven manned Apollo missions, including the historic lunar landing, and development of the space shuttle. He resigned after his ambitious plans for a moon base and a massive space station were rejected by President Nixon, returning first to GE, then to head the Northrop Corporation. Two of these books were inscribed to him at the start of his NASA service, the last after he chaired a presidential National Space Commission during the Reagan Administration. Coth in pictorial dust jacket. First Edition. Inscribed by Fairley, a British science journalist, to Paine, “with grateful thanks for your courtesy and consideration.” Hartmann, William K. Cycles of Fire / Stars, Galaxies and the Wonder of Deep Space. New York: Workman, 1987. 189 pp. Illustrated with paintings by Hartmann and Ron Miller. 10x10”, original wrappers. Tipped in is a presentation slip from Hartman, notable Planet Scientist and Space artist, to Paine: “Thanks for the good luncheon and talk with Ray Bradbury last spring. Your lecture at the DPS (Planetary Society) meeting in Pasadena was great. Here’s the result of my latest writing/painting habits…” With a 1987 Christmas note from Hartman to Paine Lot Amendments Condition: Very good. Item number: 319731a
