Three Boer War prisoner carved bone napkin rings, from St Helena. The first inscribed 'DEADWOOD KAMP St H. 1901 M.V.D.S.', the second 'MARIE BRINK St H. 1901', the third 'DEADWOOD KAMP St. H. JEM VDS 1901'. During the South African War of 1899 to 1902 the British took nearly 20,000 prisoners, resulting in overcrowded prisoner of war camps in South Africa. Camps were set up in India, Ceylon and on the island of St Helena. The Boer General, Piet Cronjé, was amongst the first contingent of 514 to arrive on St Helena. Cronjé had surrendered to Lord Roberts after the battle of Paardeberg. Illustrating his arrival on the island of St Helena, Punch magazine depicted the Boer general saluting the ghost of Napoleon and saying 'Same enemy, Sire! Same result!'.
