THORNYCROFT AND OTHERS: A VERY LARGE COLLECTION OF 19TH CENTURY BRITISH AND EUROPEAN PLAQUETTES Comprised of the following: ROYAL INTEREST: TWO CORONATION RELIEFS TOGETHER WITH TWO FURTHER comprising: 1. ARTHUR GLOVER (BRITISH, 1885-1971); EDWARD VIII, A RARE COMPOSITE MEDALLION FOR THE INTENDED CORONATION 1937, by Arthur Glover, for the Bronzalite Co., his bust right, in uniform, 163mm; 2. LEONARD JENNINGS (BRITISH, 1877-1956); GEORGE VI, LARGE CIRCULAR BRONZE MEDALLIC PLAQUE FOR THE CORONATION 1937, by Leonard Jennings for Craftstone bare head left, 230mm., broken and repaired; 3. LEONARD JENNINGS (BRITISH, 1877-1956); EDWARD VIII for the intended Coronation, 1937, 232mm., broken and repaired; 4. FREDERICK HASE HAYDEN (BRITISH, 1881-1970): “THE SPIRIT OF YOUTH”, A STAINED PLASTER ROUNDEL, by Frederick Hase Hayden, perhaps a design for a commemorative medal to celebrate the Peace following World War II, 1945, ACHIEVEMENT, a youth with banner of Peace rises above the phoenix of CHAOS, sun rays with COURAGE – ENDURANCE, legend around, THE WAR OF 1939-1945, 200mm, paper backing with title and artist’s name, in artist’s hand, signed on edge “F. HAYDEN”; Literature: A. Whittlestone & M. Ewing, Royal Commemorative Medals 1837-1977, vol. 7, King George VI, 1936- 1952, Llanfyllin, 2009 (no. 7107, ‘very rare’)Jenning's portrait sculptures were known for their subtlety of expression and close likeness. For further information: 'Leonard Jennings OBE', Mapping the Practice and Profession of Sculpture in Britain and Ireland 1851-1951, University of Glasgow History of Art, online Hayden is now best remembered for his designs for stained glass and, for a while, he worked with the Ryan family at the Abbey Stained Glass Studios (founded in 1944) in Dublin. THREE 19TH CENTURY BRITISH PORTRAIT RELIEFS OF CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) comprising a cast bronze portrait, his bearded head and shoulders to left, 180 x 145mm., c. 1870’s, mounted on ebonised oval ‘frame’ , the ‘frame’ with maker’s label, “J. Rorke, Carver – Gilder, 54 Parliament St – 73 Oakley St”. and two similar cast brass portraits of Dickens, 180 x 145mm., c. 1870’s, one mounted on oak stand, the other on a wooden shield (3) SIX RELIEF PORTRAITS OF BRITISH FIGURES INCLUDING SIR WALTER SCOTT comprising a pair of late 19th / early 20th century bronze portrait reliefs of Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) and Robert Burns (1759-1796), three quarter busts, in integral ‘frames’ with square ‘lugs’ on corners, for attachment to heavy oak backing board (to which screwed), 220 x 195mm., together with a plaster-cast of a medallic portrait of Sir Walter Scott by Crawford, c.1824, later gilded, draped in tartan mantle, square, ebonised glazed frame, ‘Gothic’ mount, 204 x 204mm, together with a set of three early 20th century pressed copper portrait plaques of RT HON A. J. BALFOUR MP; RT HON H. H. ASQUITH MP and RT HON J. CHAMBERLAIN MP, in matching oak frames, 268 x 217mm (6) ALBERT TOFT F.R.B.S. (BRITISH, 1862-1949): A PORTRAIT OF SIR HENRY IRVING (1838–1905) a circular bronze plaque, 1887, indistinctly signed, Albert Toft ‘87, his bust to left wearing jacket and tie, 248mm. SIR WILLIAM HAMO THORNYCROFT RA (BRITISH, 1850-1925): TWO BRONZE RELIEFS one for the Open Championship - Horticultural Prize, signed Hamo Thornycroft RA 1919, with a kneeling figure of Flora planting into pots, framed by trees, scroll above and inscribed plaque below, "PRESENTED BY TOOGOOD AND SONS LTD / SOVTHAMPTON / H.M.
