THORNTON, Robert John (1768-1837). Temple of Flora, or Garden of the Botanist poet, Painter and Philosopher . London: for the author [1812]. 4° (389 x 308mm). 29 stipple engravings, aquatint or mezzotint plates, including frontispiece, partially printed in colour and finished by hand, and 2 plain mezzotint plates. (Lacking engraved title on 2 leaves, lightly browned throughout, light marginal spotting and thumb-soiling.) Contemporary tree calf (rebacked, extremities lightly rubbed, a few scuff marks on covers). Provenance : Caroline Wigley, 10 Grosvenor Square (inscription on title). The smaller formatted edition of the Temple of Flora , this copy contains an additional plate, 'Persian Cyclamen' not called for by Dunthorpe. 'No two copies [of the Temple of Flora ] are alike because the plates were engraved by various processes, the impressions taken from them printed in colour and finished by hand, and altered in several instances' (Stafleu & Cowan).
