Thomas Hoepker – In 1966 Thomas Hoepker – the first German Magnum photographer – was commissioned by the magazine Stern to portray the heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, so he accompanied Ali over a lengthy period of time. This resulted in a unique photographic image of this exceptional athlete. The present photograph, taken with the Leica MP-88, shows Ali in a confrontational boxing pose, looking straight into the camera with his clenched fist directly in front of the lens in the foreground. This is the only vintage print of the image from the holdings of the photographer, who printed it himself in the darkroom. It was to become the most important picture of Muhammad Ali’s career. Hoepker himself recalls its genesis: “During his training session on another evening the champ […] sees me standing on the sidelines, in the shadow. He comes over and aims his fist at my Leica – left, ‘wham’, right, ‘wham!’, left! The light is terrible, miserably low. I try to get the fist into focus, and just when I have only three images in the can, Ali prances back to his punching bag.” This legendary photo is convincing in its density of content, its compositional sensitivity and its technical brilliance, and it also gives testimony to Hoepker’s extraordinary talent of capturing the right moment and telling a grand story with only one image. This lot is accompanied by two further photographs documenting the harmonious cooperation between Hoepker and Ali. Shot and counter-shot: Ali takes a photo of his portraitist Hoepker using the Leica MP-88, and Hoepker photographs Ali at the same time with his Leica. Thomas Hoepker – erster deutscher Magnum Fotograf – bekam 1966 vom Magazin Stern den Auftrag den Schwergewichtsboxer Muhammad Ali zu porträtieren und begleitete diesen über einen längeren Zeitraum. Dabei entstand ein einmaliges fotografisches Zeugnis des Ausnahmesportlers. Die vorliegende Fotografie, aufgenommen mit der Leica MP-88, zeigt Ali in konfrontierender Boxerpose direkt in die Kamera blickend, seine geballte Faust unmittelbar vor der Linse im Bildvordergrund. Dabei handelt es sich um den einzigen Vintage-Print dieser Aufnahme aus dem Besitz des Fotografen, den er selbst in der Dunkelkammer geprintet hat. Es wird zum wichtigsten Bild in der Karriere von Muhammad Ali. Hoepker selbst erinnert sich folgendermaßen an die Entstehung: „An einem anderen Abend, beim Training sieht [...] der Champ mich abseits im Schatten stehen. Er kommt zu mir rüber und zielt mit der Faust auf meine Leica – links, ‚bumm‘, rechts, ‚bumm!‘, links! Das Licht ist miserabel, erbärmlich schwach. Ich versuche die Faust scharf zu kriegen, habe gerade mal drei Aufnahmen im Kasten, da tänzelt Ali zurück zu seiner Boxbirne.“ Diese legendäre Aufnahme überzeugt durch inhaltliche Dichte, kompositorisches Feingefühl und technische Brillanz und zeugt zudem von Hoepkers außergewöhnlichem Talent, den richtigen Augenblick einzufangen und eine große Geschichte mit nur einem Bild zu erzählen. Dieses Los begleiten zwei weitere Fotografien, die von der stimmigen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Hoepker und Ali berichten. Schuss und Gegenschuss: Ali fotografiert seinen Porträtisten Hoepker mit der Leica MP-88 und dieser lichtet Ali dabei mit seiner Leica ab.
