THOMAS, DYLAN. Autograph manuscript of a very early (the first?) working draft of "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," his poem addressed to his dying father. N.p., n.d. [May 1951]. 2 pages, small 8vo, in blue ink on both sides of a sheet, a small marginal tear. The first nine lines (three stanzas) of the poem -- which is written in the strict form of a villanelle (19 lines in the complete published version) -- are written with a few revisions at the top of the first page: the first stanza agrees with its published form, and the third stanza nearly so; the second stanza is quite different. The remaining part of the manuscript (about a page-and-a-half) consists of some 10 working lines plus phrases, with revisions, for the yet unfinished part of the poem, most of which was not incorporated into the final version. "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" was first published in Botteghe Oscure , February 1951; its first book appearance was in In Country Sleep (published February 1952). "It is significant that for this subject and for this occasion, Thomas deliberately chose to discipline himself by the use of a strict form, the villanelle"-- Poems , ed. D. Jones, p. 270 (and no. 162 for the published poem); Rolph A109.
