Thomas Bayliss Huxley-Jones (British, 1908-1969) Seated Female Figure Patinated bronze, mounted on a wood plinth 90cm high, 80cm wide, 28cm deep On view at: The Sculpture Park Huxley-Jones studied at the Wolverhampton School of Art under Robert Jackson Emerson and then at the Royal College of Art where he was also later a tutor. He was married to the sculptor Gwyneth Holt. For many years he was principal of the School of Sculpture at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, and tutor at Mid Essex Technical College and School of Art in Chelmsford. An internationally renowned sculptor, he exhibited with the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the Royal Scottish Academy amongst others. Huxley-Jones was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1945 and received numerous awards for his work including the Prix de Rome Scholarship. In 1963 he was awarded the Otto Beit medal for sculpture of outstanding merit for his statue of Mother and Child. Huxley-Jones completed a large volume of public work, including Helios at the old BBC Television Centre, London, in Chelmsford Cathedral, outside Hornsey Library and, probably most famously, the 'Joy of Life' fountain in London's Hyde Park. His work is held in the collections of the Wolverhampton and Aberdeen art galleries. Huxley-Jones is known for his smooth and simple profiles of the human form. A very similar model was sold at Bonhams Knightsbridge, Camberwell and Beyond, 26 September 2007, lot 60
