The grouping, housed in 16 boxes, covers the history of printing and bookmaking, beginning with examples of illuminated manuscript leaves, to incunable fragments, to woodcuts before and after 1500, to the more sophisticated copper engravings that followed. Present are examples of engraved portraits, coats of arms, title-pages, printers devices, costumes, literary and allegorical scenes, landscapes and other views. Most samples have been trimmed from larger pages and laid down to loose sheets, most with identification in manuscript to mount. Highlights include samples attributed to ALBRECHT DURER, HEINRICH ALDEGREVER LUKAS CRANACH THE YOUNGER HANS LUTZELBERGER, and maps by SEBASTIAN MUENSTER, among many others. Should be viewed.
