THEVENOT, Jean de (d. 1667). The Travels of Monsieur de Thevenot into the Levant. In three parts. Viz. Into Turkey, Persia, the East-Indies . London: H. Clark for H. Faithorne, J. Adamson, C. Skegnes and T. Newborough, 1687. 2 (317 x 190mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by W. Faithorne and 3 plates. With three sectional titles and errata leaf. (Frontispiece with tears at inner margin, the final plate bound in upside down, small holes causing slight loss in B1, F1 and U1 of part I, U3 and 2B3 of part II, 2G1 of part I with lower corner of blank margin torn away, several other marginal tears and small holes, some light browning and spotting.) Contemporary calf with morocco lettering-piece, red speckled edges (joints cracked, covers pitted). Provenance : F. Foljambe (contemporary signature on front pastedown). Second English edition of this well-known work. First published in French, 1663-1684, it marks 'the beginning of the great epoch of travel and exploration in the Levant'. Thevenot began his travels in 1655, but returned to Paris in 1659 to prepare the first and longest part of his work for publication. This describes Constantinople, the Archipelago, Asia Minor and Egypt. In October 1663 he left Paris and travelled through Syria and Persia to India. In 1667 he died near Tabriz, leaving the second and third parts of his work in the hands of two editors, Petis de la Croix and Sieur de Luisandre. Wing T-887. Cf.
