(Spotting and staining, more prevalent at beginning and end, 28/5.6 almost loose.) 18th-century Italian vellum over thin pasteboard, blue edges (a little darkened, slight wear at extremities). Provenance : Shirley of Shirley (19th-century armorial bookplate) -- Walter Hirst (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, printed at the second press at Rome, of commentaries on the Pauline epistles. Theophylact's Biblical commentaries were influential in Biblical exegesis of the 16th century and were a particular source for Erasmus. The work is attributed in the text to Athanasius, an attribution also reflected on the spine title.
