TheAtom is a road legal high performance sports car made by the Ariel Motor Company based in Somerset and features a prominently visible chassis (an exoskeleton, no roof or windows,) with a drag coefficient of 0.40. The Atom began as a student project by Coventry University transport design student, Niki Smart. It was developed at the university in 1996 with input and funding from various automotive industry members, including British Steel and TWR. Ariel Motor Company boss Simon Saunders was a senior lecturer whose responsibility for the project was primarily as financial manager and design critic for Smart, whom he described as 'The best all-round design student I've ever seen'. The car was first shown publicly at the British International Motor Show in Birmingham in October 1996. This Ariel Atom was originally registered on 8 th June 2004 and is powered by a 1998cc 160bhp power unit. The gearbox is a six-speed manual transmission, and braking system is via disc brakes all-round with the fronts being ventilated. It's all business inside the cockpit with integrated race seats, a quick release steering wheel and stainless steel gear knob. Straightforward instruments monitor speed and revs, while normal indicator lights and indicators are a reminder that this is a road car too. With no real creature comforts or excess weight, this Atom is quite simply astonishing to drive, with 0-60mph achieved in under three seconds. Supplied with a V5C registration document, a full years MoT test certificate and some history; is it possible to have more fun on four wheels
