The Woeful Victory, 4 collotypes, 1909, after drawings by Siddal from c.1855, each with a manuscript label verso of contemporary mount written by William Michael Rossetti stating by Elizabeth E. Siddal, whom D.G. Rossetti married in 1860, giving the title and date of each drawing, each is further inscribed Presented by Wm.M. Rossetti for the Bookstall of the Women's Social and Political Union, May 1909, v.s., 100 x 75mm. (3 7/8 x 3 in) to 130 x 100mm. (5 1/8 x 3 7/8 in), all unframed (4) Eleanor Siddal (1829-1862) is best known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti's muse and frequent model, whom he later married before her tragic early death. But she was a poet and artist in her own right, and Willaim Michael Rossetti (1819-1929), her brother-in-law, co-founder and chronicler of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, would have known all aspects of her life well. The notes mounted on each drawing give insights into her wider talents. On St Cecilia & an Angel, for instance, the note reveals This drawing was probably made before a design, similar in essentials, by Rossetti, engraved in the illustrated edition of Tennyson. On The Woeful Victory is written The subject is from Rossetti's poem The Bride's Prelude, but the part of the poem which was actually written does not comprise this incident - Drawing done c.1855. William Michael Rossetti's connection with the Women's Social and Political Union, the principal organisation of the Suffragette movement founded in 1903, was probably through his daughters who had published the anarchist journal, The Torch, from the family home.
