THE WAYSIDE GROTTO Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974)

Daniel O’Neill began painting in 1939 just before the onset of World War II. One year later he exhibited in a small group show at the Moll Gallery Belfast where, discouragingly, none of his works sold... d. Later during the blitz O’Neill along with his artistic companion Gerard Dillon experimented in sculpture owing to the large quantity of rubble and debris on the Belfast streets. In 1943 they held a joint exhibition of paintings at the Contemporary Pictures Gallery, 133 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin. O’Neill showed seven works at this show and Snoddy lists three of their titles as, Head of Christ, Wayside Murder and Clowns. Two of his seven works were sold at this exhibition. (See Snoddy, p. 492) Wayside Grotto was possibly one of these two successful sales in 1943. The title would indicate continuity with that of Wayside Murder while the sombre tone and religious subject matter echoes that of Head of Christ more
