Beschreibung:

Lithograph, 22.25 x 27 in., showing Ulysses S. Grant holding a council of war outside the Massaponax Church in Spotsylvania County, VA on May 21, 1864. His fellow Union officers, including Generals Sherman, Meade, and Hancock, appear seated on pews, with horses and cannon in the background. Christian Inger, Philadelphia, PA: 1886. After the Alexander Gardner print of a Timothy H. O'Sullivan negative. After a particularly arduous day, Grant left the battlefield at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia and convened with his staff in a field in Massaponax. Grant's soldiers removed the pews from a nearby church and arranged them in a circular shape beneath a group of trees. There, Grant, other generals, and Assistant Secretary of War Charles A. Dana discussed their current situation, plagued by heavy losses and outmaneuvering by the enemy, and plotted a path forward. Condition: Overall toning, with areas of discoloration, including adhesive residue. Edges with minor areas of loss, as well as some larger tears (all less than 2 in.).
