Title: The Voyage of Nearchus from the Indus to the Euphrates Author: Vincent, Willam Place: London Publisher: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies Date: 1797 Description: xvi, 530, [2, errata and directions to binder] pp. Engraved frontispiece and 6 engraved maps and charts (4 folding). (4to) 27.5x21.5 cm (10¾x8½") period full calf. First Edition. Title continues: "Collected from the Original Journal Preserved by Arrian, and Illustrated by Authorities Ancient and Modern; Containing an Account of the First Navigation Attempted by Europeans in the Indian Ocean." Nearchus was one of Alexander's principal officers. In 325 BC he was ordered to take Alexander's fleet to the head of the Persian Gulf, and to circumnavigate Arabia from the Euphrates to the Isthmus of Suez. Nearchus's narrative of his expedition was included by Arrian in his "Indica" written in 2nd Century A.D. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding worn, covers and endpapers detached; small erasure at head of title page, some foxing throughout; internally very good, well worthy of binding restoration.
