Author: Still, William Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Porter & Coates Date: 1872 Description: [4], 17-780 pp. Illustrated with 24 engraved plates. (8vo) 24.5x17.4 cm (9½x6¾"), terra cotta cloth stamped in gilt. First edition. William Still was an African-American abolitionist based in Philadelphia. He was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, businessman, writer, historian and civil rights activist. Before the American Civil War, Still was chairman of the Vigilance Committee of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society. He directly aided fugitive slaves and also kept records of the people served in order to help families reunite. Lot Amendments Condition: Front hinge repaired, rubbing and wear to extremities; some internal toning and foxing, previous owner's names in pencil; overall very good. Item number: 319389
