Beschreibung:

A black and gilt japanned Baroque cabinet incorporating Chinese export elements, arched upper section with a mirrored central cupboard door enclosing a shelf and five small drawers, flanked by cupboards each enclosing five drawers, with two drawers below, the base with two cupboard doors to each side, each enclosing three drawers, on bracket feet. Northern Europe, mid-18th century. H. 198 cm. W. 109 cm. D. 83 cm. Provenance: Previously at Torbenfeldt Castle, Sealand. Torbenfeldt is first mentioned in 1377. Early owners include members of the noble Moltke, Gøye and Brahe families. In 1668 the estate was acquired by King Frederick III who renamed it Frydendal. The name was later changed back to Torbenfeldt by the Treschow family. It is unknown when the cabinet came to the household, where it came from and when it left. A photo of the cabinet taken in the great hall of Torbenfeldt is shown in ‘Danske Slotte og Herregårde’, 1964, Hassings forlag, p. 99.
