The Sporting Magazine . London: John Wheble [and others], [October 1792]-1793-1870. 156 volumes, 8° (218 x 138mm. and large). Engraved titles, numerous engraved plates. (Early photographic facsimile title to the final volume.) Bound to match in contemporary and later red straight-grained morocco gilt by Riviere & Son or Bumpus, covers with single fillet border, spines in six compartments with raised bands, the bands highlighted with a single thin gilt fillet and flanked by a pair of thicker fillets, lettered in gilt in the second and third, dated at the foot of each spine, gilt turn-ins, top edges gilt. [With:] [Fred. S Banks (compilor), Francis Lawley and Walter Gilbey]. Index of Engravings with the names of the Artists in the Sporting magazine from the Year 1792 to 1870. London: published for Walter Gilbey by Vinton & Co., Limited, [no date but 1892?]. 8° (218 x 138mm). Bound to match 'The Sporting Magazine' in red straight-grained morocco by Bumpus, gilt covers, spine and turn-ins, top edges gilt. A VERY FINE COMPLETE SET OF WHAT SCHWERDT NOTES 'IS, WITHOUT DOUBT, THE MOST INTERESTING SPORTING PUBLICATION OF ITS TIME ... THE PARAMOUNT SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR THE HISTORIAN OF THE CHASE': very rare in this condition. Current book-collecting fashion demands that everything is in as original condition as possible - the present set does not conform to that 'ideal' but does offer in its uniform morocco binding what is probably the most practical and attractive form. Included are sporting anecdotes, gossip, contemporary reports of the great sporting events of the day, biographical details of sportsmen and their animals, poetry and calendars: 'there is hardly an incident of note in the whole field of sporting subjects which the student cannot find an account of in this monumental work' (Schwerdt). This work also showcases the talents of many of the greatest sporting artists of the time: Henry Alken A. Cooper, the Ferneleys, Harry Hall the Herrings, Howitt, Marshall, George Morland the Sartorius's, F.C. Turner and others ('there is hardly an artist of repute whose contributions did not enrich this work' [Schwerdt]). All the artists who contributed, and their works are all listed in the accompanying index (published in 1892, in time to celebrate the centenary of the start of the magazine). Schwerdt II,pp.174-203 (an extensive entry listing every plate and highlighting the eight plates that are not included in the 1892 index). (157)
