THE SPANISH FORGER. Female saint greeting kneeling female supplicant. Large historiated initial 'D' on an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF ON VELLUM. [France, 1st quarter 20th century] 207 x 150mm. Female saint and kneeling woman (perhaps modelled on Visitation), with four figures in courtly or merchant dress in front of city gates, with walls, river, hills and trees in background, in colours and liquid gold. Within initial of light and dark blue with white penwork, with foliate extensions, on background of burnished gold on red ground (a little wear, craquelure on gold). On the verso is part of three staves with text and music from a Spanish Antiphonal (ca. 1500). A characteristic work of the so-called Spanish Forger, sought-after for his distinctive pseudo-medieval miniatures created around the beginning of this century. There are a number of similar scenes illustrated in W. Voelkle, The Spanish Forger (New York, 1978).
