Beschreibung:

the scene of devastation depicted a few months after the famous Charge of the Light Brigade, the corpses of horses still visible amongst the numerous scattering of cannon balls across the terrain, watercolour over pencil, 210 x 330mm., signed and dated, July 1855, and inscribed, Valley of Death behind our left attack, lower left, also initialed and dated two months earlier just above, slight surface wear, a tear from the right sheet edge, framed and glazed, 1855; accompanied with a framed sheet of the first two verses of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's famous poem (2). *** The Charge of the Light Brigade took place during the Battle of Balaklava, on 25th October, 1854. The disastrous loss of life that followed confusion over orders was commemorated by Alfred, Lord Tennyson in his famous poem, published a mere six weeks after the event. William Brabazon Urmston (1828-1869), was promoted to lieutenant in 1848, and served with Royal Navy Brigade during the Crimean War, 1854-55, and he is known to have made watercolour sketches of many locations and events during the campaign (c.f. a group of similar watercolours, supposedly extracted from a sketchbook, sold at Bonham's Oxford, April, 2008).
