The disastrous loss of life that followed confusion over orders was commemorated by Alfred, Lord Tennyson in his famous poem, published a mere six weeks after the event. William Brabazon Urmston (1828-1869), was promoted to lieutenant in 1848, and served with Royal Navy Brigade during the Crimean War, 1854-55, and he is known to have made watercolour sketches of many locations and events during the campaign (c.f. a group of similar watercolours, supposedly extracted from a sketchbook, sold at Bonham's Oxford, April, 2008).
