Title: The Saga of Billy the Kid - with inscription & photographs of Francisco Gomez, one of his cohorts Author: Burns, Walter Noble Place: New York Publisher: Grosset & Dunlap Date: [1926, but later] Description: Cloth. With inscription by Francisco Gomez, who as a youth knew and briefly rode with Billy the Kid, a.k.a. William Bonney. With eleven photographs, most of Gomez in his elder years, glued into the book, many with captions by a former owner of the book (apparently Taylor Sloan), plus a few related items. Francisco Gomez moved with his family to Lincoln, New Mexico, at age nine in 1863. About 10 years later he went to work for the McSweens, and during that time William Bonney stayed with the McSweens for about 7 months, and the two became acquainted. Gomez once rode with the Kid after some outlaws, at the behest of Sheriff Baca, but was not involved with the Lincoln County War. The inscription by Gomez is in Spanish, with an English translation in another hand, reads in part: "This is to show that I Francisco Gomez was a personly [sic] pal of Bill the Kid and to let you know that I stayed with Billy the Kid seven months at the house of McSween. Before he was gone he stopped at my house to say good by." Lot Amendments Condition: Well worn, spine strip detached, joints cracked; tape repair to gutter of page with inscription affecting a few words and the edge of facing photograph, which is detached along with a few leaves, some photos detached, the whole shaken; just good, sold as is, but with the significant inscription by and photographs of one of the last surviving men at the time (1940) to have known and rode with Billy the Kid. Item number: 185228
