The Ristigouche and its Salmon Fishing. With a Chapter on Angling Literature. Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1888. xvi, 275, [1] + [6] ad pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece and pictorial title-page (partly printed in red) after G. Reid by Annan and Swan; 16 full–page etchings and other smaller plates, with tissue-guards; 63 etched or engraved head and tail pieces; initials, vignettes and other ornaments throughout; a double-page lithographed map by J. Bartholomew; engraved advertisements in the back. Six etchings are by Canadian artist Henry Sandham other artists include Stephen Parrish (the father of Maxfield Parrish , C.A. Platt, Anna Lea Merritt Charles Oliver Murray, and George W. Aikman. Folio. Original full green buckram with gilt stamped osprey and salmon vignette on the front cover, spine lettered in gilt, green leaf-patterned endpapers, laid in are remnants of what appears to be the original dust wrapper. Some light offset from plates, but generally internally clean, light shelfwear, spine somewhat toned, but an excellent copy. First edition, limited edition, no 87 of 105 copies, 50 of which were for private presentation, initialed by the publisher with "W.D." in pencil. The rarest and most beautiful book on salmon fishing and with an important chapter on the collecting of angling literature. Sage describes the colorful characters he encountered and his many adventures on the Ristigouche, but also dispenses much practical information.
