With a Chapter on Angling Literature Author: Sage, Dean Place: Edinburgh Publisher: David Douglas Date: 1888 Description: xvi, 275 + [5] ad pp. Illustrated with an aquatint frontispiece and pictorial title-page (partly printed in red) after G. Reid by Annnan and Swan; 16 full etched plates and other smaller plates on Japan paper, with tissue-guards; 63 etched or engraved head and tail pieces, initials, vignettes and other ornaments throughout including tied flies; a double-page lithographed map after and by J. Bartholomew; engraved advertisements in the back. 12½x9, original full green buckram with gilt stamped osprey and salmon vignette on the front cover, spine lettered in bright gilt, green leaf-patterned endpapers with grosgrain ribbon on gutters. No. 4 of 105 copies, 50 of which were for private presentation, initialed by the publisher with "W.D." penciled. First Edition. The rarest and most beautiful book on salmon fishing. The Restigouche River is known as one of the best salmon-fishing rivers in the world. American fishing enthusiast Dean Sage (1841-1902) starts with the geography and history of the Restigouche before dealing with the habits of the salmon and the history of fishing clubs, while entertaining the reader with many interesting fishing stories throughout. The illustrations, especially that of Henry Sandham make this book important in the field of Canadian art. Sandham contributed six original etchings, five plates and one vignette, all but one drawn and engraved by the artist. Other contributions from engravers Stephen Parrish (the father of Maxfield Parrish , C.A. Platt, Anna Lea Merritt Charles Oliver Murray, and George W. Aikman. A lavish production of this important book in the field of salmon fishing. Bruns S4; Heckscher 1681; Phillips 328; Litchfield 58. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine and edges a bit faded, rubbing; front hinge cracked (rear just starting), occasional faint foxing; otherwise interior nice and clean; binding and exterior still very good.
