Beschreibung:

The Rental book of Diethers von Ernberg, in German, manuscript on paper [Germany, dated 1555] 172 leaves, apparently complete as in sixteenth century: wanting a few leaves, but these all apparently cancelled blanks or leaves removed to expunge errors or outdated records, collation: i-vi8, vii7 (last but one cancelled), viii-xi8, xii7 (last but one cancelled), xiii-xvii8, xviii7 (last leaf cancelled), xix-xxi8, xxii7 (last but one cancelled, probably blank), contemporary quire and folio signatures, entries in single column, with opening titles in large decorative script, the remaining records in an angular Renaissance secretarial hand, a few entries in same hand but different ink hue and perhaps added after production of main volume, blank leaves left at end of each section for extension of this record, a single dried and pressed plant-leaf found during present cataloguing within the volume set between two book-leaves which were loosely adhered together (this of some significant age and now black, and perhaps sixteenth century or a little later), remnants of metal leaf-markers, first gathering detached and loose in volume, a few leaves bumped at edges, but overall in solid state of preservation, 200 by 150 mm., contemporary stamped pigskin binding over thin wooden boards (front board bowed), with concentric rectangles of flowers and portraits of Evangelists and devotional scenes (tears to extremities, with wood exposed at top of front board and spine), remnants of two metal clasps (one remaining) At the time this record was composed, Diethers von Ernberg was the head of the powerful von Erenberg family, who since the twelfth century had been key supporters of the Staufer dynasty, with their family seat at Heinsheim, Baden-Württemberg. In the thirteenth century they were given rule over the bishopric of Worms along with Worms, Heinsheim, Zimmerhof, Bargen and Wollenberg. The line went extinct in 1647. The discovery of the dried plant-leaf during the cataloguing of this item may be of interest to paleobotanists and perhaps deserves some comment here. It is rounded in general form, and evidently that of bush or fruit tree rather than a larger European deciduous tree, and as it left no stains on the book-leaves within which it was cocooned it was presumably already dry when it was tucked into the volume.
