Beschreibung:

The rectangular panel decorated overall in tones of green, brown, beige, black, white, red and gold with a recumbent figure of Diana drawing her bow, two gazelles in flight, all against a mottled red and beige grid-work lacquer ground, later veined and silvered wood frame, the reverse impressed, Atelier Paul Jouve 1940. Height overall 43 1/2in (1.11m); length 6ft, 3in (1.90m) Note: cf Paul Jouve 1880-1973 Painter, sculptor and illustrator, Paul Jouve was accomplished in all mediums of fine art and indeed produced many successful works in each. Perhaps best known for his animal paintings, prints and sculptures, his interest in the exotic and vigorous nature of jungle life was well documented. Taking inspiration from zoology, especially from members of the feline and pachyderm families, he began exhibiting his menagerie in the 1897 Salon Nationale des Beaux Arts at age15 and again in the Paris Exhibition of 1900. His 1910 series of book illustrations based on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, proved to be very successful and he continued working in the publishing world, designing ivory and metal cover panels for book designers and binderies. His elephant research expedition to Cambodia in 1918 resulted in the another successful group of book illustrations for Pierre Loti's A Pilgrim from Angkor, With Jean Goulden Francois-Louis Schmied and Jean Dunand Jouve exhibited his work at the George Petit Gallery, 1921-23 and later Galerie Charpentier, 1933-34. Their friendships naturally resulted in projects together. Schmied, working in woodblock and other print mediums and Jean Dunand the master lacquerist, produced exceptional works based on Jouve designs. His remarkable output is evidenced by his regular participation the Salon des Artistes Decorateurs in 1907 continuing until 1934. The work offered above, dated 1940, shows an unusual side to Jouve's artistry: the use of the mythological figure Diana the huntress, placed in a usual habitat, a jungle setting replete with gazelles and exotic flora. The lower right section of black lacquer with eggshell decoration is very much in the style of Dunand. Literature: cf. Victor Arwas, Art Deco,Academy Editions, London, 1980, p. 106, 119, 169,201 and 300, for discussion and examples of Jouve's work. Felix Marcilhac, Jean Dunand His Life and Work, Harry N. Abrams, New York,1991, pp. 8.36,38, 40 and cat. No 1,2,307,812, and 856., for a discussion and examples of their collaboration. Alain Lesieutre The Spirit and Splendor of Art Deco, Secaucus, Castle Books, 1978, pp.52, 59-63, for a selection of paintings and prints. Sarah Morgan, Art Deco The European Style, New York, Gallery Books, 1990, pp. 154,162-64, for a discussion and examples.
